Student Support Services in Intensive English Programmes
摘要
This chapter explores the pivotal role of student support services in Intensive English Programmes (IEPs) within Turkish universities, highlighting the integral components and practices enhancing student experiences and outcomes. With the increasing internationalisation of higher education in Türkiye, IEPs have become critical in preparing local and international students for academic success. This chapter begins by defining key concepts and outlining the significance of comprehensive support systems tailored to the unique needs of English-language learners. It delves into various support services, including academic, psychological, career, social integration, and health services, emphasising the importance of a holistic approach to student support. The chapter showcases effective practices and innovative strategies for delivering student support services by analysing cases from multiple Turkish universities. It addresses the challenges institutions face in implementing these services, such as resource limitations and cultural barriers, while examining the positive impacts of well-structured support on students’ language proficiency, academic achievement, and overall well-being. The chapter concludes with forward-looking recommendations for enhancing student support services in IEPs, advocating for policy changes, and adopting emerging technologies. This discussion not only underscores the critical role of student support services in the success of IEPs but also offers valuable insights for educators, administrators, and policymakers aiming to improve language education in higher education contexts.
