This chapter examines the ideological transformation of the Mexican Conservative Party in the wake of the 1848 European revolutions. Far from being reactionary traditionalists, Mexican Conservatives engaged dynamically with transnational political developments, particularly the rise of the Second French Empire. Through editorials in El Universal, they articulated a vision of order, modernisation, and monarchy as a legitimate path to national progress. Inspired by Bonapartism, they embraced illiberal democracy and state-led development, ultimately supporting the French-backed Second Mexican Empire. This chapter reframes Mexican conservatism as a modernising force that adapted European models to local realities and contributed to a broader international conservative reaction after 1848.
