This chapter analyzes Gabriel García Moreno’s failed attempt to establish a French protectorate over Ecuador between 1859 and 1862—a project that was generally presented as a personal initiative of the Ecuadorian president but that responded to deeper factors. The origin of the project to place the country under the protectorate of Napoleon III is to be found in the reaction of a sector of the Ecuadorian oligarchy—not just in the Sierra but also on the coast—to the problem represented by the territorial disarticulation of the country, the internal instability, and the external threats against its territorial integrity and even its existence as an independent nation.
