This chapter analyses the projects devised by Spain’s political and intellectual elites to restore the monarchical system in the Spanish-American republics, from the definitive collapse of viceregal rule in the Americas (1824–1826) to the end of Isabella II’s reign (1868). Spanish transatlantic monarchism functioned as a political imaginary that shaped and channelled the ideological proposals of illiberal absolutism, moderate liberalism, and progressivism. This chapter explores these constellations of ideas and images and their performative power; that is, it examines whether the ministers and diplomatic agents of the Spanish monarchy conceived and implemented foreign policy in accordance with the imperatives of transatlantic monarchism.
