Will Alexander’s book Spectral Hieroglyphics (2016) is a “poetic troika” of three long poems of address to select precursor poets who each impacted surrealism without ever being members of the movement. This trio of poems creates an ethereal web of relationships between Alexander and past poets Antonin Artaud (1896–1948), Roger Gilbert-Lecomte (1907–1943), and Aimé Césaire (1913–2008). Each of the poems in Spectral Hieroglyphics is written “for” one of these authors and is followed by an accompanying glossary in prose by Alexander, where more context is given for each direct address.
