This chapter offers three genre-minded analyses of three saga texts. Besides providing observations that advance the study of these specific texts, it also generally offers a path to approaching saga texts, medieval texts, and literature in general. It begins by discussing Hreiðars þáttr—an episode that is a part of the larger kings’ saga Morkinskinna—through its use of and play with genre conventions. It then analyses how Ljósvetninga saga was shaped by its various editors, and how philologists have picked it apart and dramatically altered its extant form, motivated by personal notions of genre. Finally Hávarðar saga Ísfirðings is explored as a parody, returning to generic crossroads and how these are played with to entertain the audience.
