Climate change has resulted in more frequent and severe forest fires, droughts, storms, and outbreaks of pests and pathogens. These changes negatively affect both the quantity and quality of water.This is potentially vulnerable to catastrophic global forest fires and climate change impacts in numerous regions. Increased evaporation rates are expected to reduce water supplies in many areas. This leads to broader alterations in climate and weather patterns. Forest fires do not just consume vegetation but also devastate the forest floor, leaving soils vulnerable to precipitation. This increases the risk of erosion, sediment transport to streams, debris flows, and the release of chemicals. These factors significantly degrade water quality, enhance mineralization, and promote mineral weathering. Fire impacts catchment behavior by influencing crucial hydrological factors that regulate infiltration and surface runoff.The mineralization of organic matter induced by fire results in the liberation of substantial quantities of metals into the ash and soil matrix. This process renders these metals highly susceptible to mobilization, posing a significant risk of soil and water contamination in downstream ecosystems.
