Forest fires’ increasing frequency and intensity necessitate a paradigm shift in fire management toward sustainable practices. Traditional fire suppression methods have often overlooked the ecological role of fire, leading to unintended consequences such as fuel build-up and increased severity of forest fires. Sustainable fire management aims to strike a balance by integrating controlled burns, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement. This chapter synthesizes the sustainable forest fire management approaches, examining their efficacy in mitigating environmental, social, and economic impacts. The chapter explores fire management strategies’ evolution, emphasizing the need for a holistic and adaptive framework. Recent technological advances for early detection, monitoring, and modeling and their implications for enhancing firefighting capabilities are discussed. Indigenous fire knowledge and community engagement are integral to sustainable fire management, promoting resilience and fostering collaborative approaches. The present study also addresses the influence of climate change on fire behavior, underscoring the importance of adaptive strategies. Through a comprehensive analysis of case studies and current research, this review paper aims to provide insights into the effectiveness and challenges of sustainable fire management practices in diverse ecosystems.
