Forest fires (FFs) are complex climatic and human influences issues that disastrously impact humans, social capital, and the ecosystems of affected regions at a global scale. These fires influence the micro and macroclimate of the areas affected and, at the same time, climate change, which is expected to increase the frequency and severity of these fires, leading to post-fire recruitment failure of species and permanent ecological loss across the impacted forests. The effects of these forest fires can be detrimental or valuable, depending on their location and nature across the regions. Generally, government agencies, particularly forest departments, manage forest fire risks by managing and quantifying locality-specific biophysical plethora of variables such as land use type, land undulation, edaphic and climatic factors, and the fuel load under the forests, amongst which the fuel load plays a crucial role in determining the forest fire extent. This scenario is especially true in the Himalayan region where the Pine (Pinus roxburghii Sarg.) is locally known as Chir-Pine, a dominating and fire-vulnerable species. In the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, where forest fire is a prevalent and recurring issue, these Pine forests are the dominant and most affected species, covering an area of 18% of the state forest cover. However, with the significant increase in these forest fire issues, it is suggested that the administrative and community capacities of the region should be strengthened to improve forest fire prevention and management, as public education and awareness campaigns are crucial to enhance compliance with forest fire policies at the local level and comprehending the domino impacts of the forest fire issue. This study examines the role of local communities, particularly the Van Panchayats of Uttarakhand, in forest fire prevention and management. Through case studies, the research highlights the significant contributions of these communities to forest fire management and suggests their practices be incorporated into regional decision-making processes.
