Climate Change and Forest Fires: Ecosystem Vulnerability and Resilience

Climate change and fires are critical drivers of forest ecosystem vulnerability and resilience, impacting biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem services. This chapter explores the complex interactions between climate change and forest fires, investigating how climate change influences the frequency, intensity, and distribution of forest fires and how these fires, in turn, impact ecosystem dynamics. This study revealed that rising global temperatures and changing precipitation patterns are critical drivers of more frequent and severe forest fires. The changes in temperature and precipitation are significant to forest ecosystems, disrupting natural processes and contributing to habitat loss and species decline. Moreover, the factors, particularly vegetation type, soil moisture, and topography, play a significant role in forest fire severity. Understanding the interactions between climate change, forest fire, and society and integrating them into management practices would help develop adaptive management strategies to enhance forest resilience, mitigate climate change impacts, and conserve biodiversity. Furthermore, we discuss future research directions to address knowledge gaps and improve predictive models to effectively manage and conserve forest biodiversity amidst ongoing global climate change.
