Terrorism in Kenya: Trends and Perspectives
摘要
Terrorism in Kenya is sustained by the structural vulnerabilities at domestic level and external threats inherent in the Horn of Africa which plays host to terrorist organizations linked to the Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. Kenya’s relationship with the West (proxy target), youth unemployment, marginalization of certain regions of the country, alienation of Muslim minority and the Somali ethnic group, and Kenya’s proximity to Somalia have exposed the country to terrorism. In addition, external terrorist groups have exploited the disconnect between the Kenyan state and vulnerable groups such as unemployed youth, Muslim minority, and Somalis, to radicalize the disenfranchised into joining terrorist groups for domestic and foreign operations. As such, external terrorist groups have established the domestic or home-grown extremism in Kenya as a foothold for terrorism targeted at the state.
