Genetic testing in men may open Pandora’s box, prompting worry about future MBC risk and guilt concerning putting their offspring at risk. Many males do not want to disclose the information and are unable to confide in other men so turn to females for support. Within the Veterans Administration only 27% of eligible males were referred for counselling or testing and half of VA Medical Centres made no referrals. An online survey revealed 5 areas of concern: their children’s risk, personal risk, impact on quality of life, need for male-focused support groups and open communication with family and friends. In a survey of MBC survivors they complained of more physical and mental problems than controls, were significantly more obese and had limited activity with poorer life satisfaction. The role of the doctor as a support was investigated and there proved to be a negative correlation between the doctor’s empathy score and patient stigmatisation and a positive correlation with patients’ self-esteem. Another online survey of Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR) found significant psychological morbidity in 61% with older men being less likely to suffer from FCR.
