This chapter highlights Barbie’s persona as an animal lover in children’s films, narrating a history of her animal companions through four case studies of direct-to-DVD CGI cartoons starring the iconic doll. Placing the films Barbie of Swan Lake (2003), Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia, Barbie as the Island Princess (2007), and Barbie Dolphin Magic (2017) in the context of both Barbie’s own toy history and the wider history of animal cartooning, the chapter details how their narratives and animation techniques establish Barbie as an ideal feminine caregiver and animal lover. This investigation is enabled by Paul Wells’ typology of cartoon animals, Akira Mizuta Lippitt’s theoretical figure of the “electric animal” in animation, and the historical work of Finis Dunaway and Jennifer Price on “green images” in pop culture and animals’ relationship with kitsch culture. By creating a new historical narrative of Barbie as an animal lover, the chapter opens up new lines of thinking about this key American character brand and its role in modeling not just gender, but also human kinship with animals and landscapes.
