Most of the objects described in this book are remote from us, and we think of them as “out there.” By engaging with the wider environment, by studying that “out there,” we not only become conscious of the Earth as a planet and can compare it with others, but we continue to learn about our own perception and our understanding of ourselves. We discover that, as inhabitants of the Universe, of space, we are already “out there” along with everything else. There is nothing new about such engagement, with or without high-tech aids. Space exploration, with direct unaided vision as well as with telescopes and spacecraft, is not the privilege of any one location on the planet. The sky surrounds the whole Earth.

摘要
