Exploring Electronic Sycophancy in the Hospitality Industry: Why Do Some Employees Flatter Their Managers on Social Media Platforms?
摘要
Electronic sycophancy is flattering influential people in the organization on social media. This behavior aims to gain benefits (e.g. rewards) or avoiding a threat (e.g. losing job). This behavior has been under-researched by scholars for a long time. The paper aims to explore why employees in the hospitality industry overpraise their managers on social media platforms. The research presents previous literature review that conducted on sycophancy and highlight COR Theory as a potential interpretation for this newly researched behavior. The study is qualitative in nature. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen frontline employees at four and five stars hotels. Questions used in the current study were developed based on literature review and previous studies, which discussed motivational factors for employees to engage in a certain behavior. Results show that different factors motivated employees to engage in e-sycophancy. These factors included economic situations, self-interest, personality type, limited resources, lack of competency, and leadership style. The current study adds rich qualitative data to the scanty e-sycophancy literature. Implications, limitations and future studies are discussed.
