Predicting Acceptance of Smart Home Technologies Among Professionals: Evidence from Emerging Market

Smart Home Technologies (SHT) consist of devices that are interconnected such as networks, sensors, and household appliances installed in a residence that allow occupants to access, monitor or control home environments remotely in response to their needs. Despite its well-known advantages and fast growing SHT market, SHT is not as well accepted in developing countries as compared to more developed ones. This study assesses the determinants of SHT acceptance among professionals in Malaysia. By incorporating perceived privacy risk, personal innovativeness, and cultural moderator, the theoretical model expands upon the modified UTAUT2). Survey responses were analyzed using PLS-SEM. Results highlighted that effort expectancy (EE), performance expectation (PE), social influence (SI), and personal innovativeness in IT (PIIT) have significant positive effects on SHT acceptance. Both SI and EE positively influence PE while Legislative Protection were found to have significant negative relationship with Perceived Privacy Risk. Cultural was found to positively moderate the effect of EE on acceptance. Theoretically, this study tested extended factors of UTAUT2 in an emerging country as it discovered significant factors that increase the acceptance of SHT. The findings are crucial for IoT application companies and business owners to formulate strategies that address consumers’ concerns.
