Chapter Seven demonstrates how patriotic citizens display higher levels of political trust, external political efficacy, and commitment to democratic principles. Using novel survey data, the chapter shows that people who love their country also tend to hold more positive attitudes toward its institutions—while still acknowledging its flaws. This finding implies that patriotism can be an important buffer against democratic backsliding, as it fosters confidence in core governing structures.
