The results reveal a nuanced patriotism: respondents commonly criticize America’s failures while expressing gratitude for its freedoms and opportunities. Text-as-data analyses confirm that most Americans hold a “clear-eyed” love for their country, neither blind nor uncritical. This chapter thus complicates simplistic portrayals of patriotism by showing how it often involves an ongoing negotiation of pride, hope, and concern for societal problems.
