In the study of the mechanics of deformable bodies, we seek to describe how forces get transmitted through solid bodies. In this chapter we demonstrate that an internal state called stress is an ideal way to characterize how forces flow through a solid body, and that stress must be represented mathematically as a tensor. Ultimately, the objective of the chapter is to show how the concept of stress relates to equilibrium of a solid body.

摘要

In the study of the mechanics of deformable bodies, we seek to describe how forces get transmitted through solid bodies. In this chapter we demonstrate that an internal state called stress is an ideal way to characterize how forces flow through a solid body, and that stress must be represented mathematically as a tensor. Ultimately, the objective of the chapter is to show how the concept of stress relates to equilibrium of a solid body.
