The ideal management of hernias for women of childbearing age (WoCA) is an emerging field of research. While ventral and inguinal hernia repairs are a relatively common procedure in the United States (US), the prevalence, management, and complications of these hernias are not well-studied in women of childbearing age. Specific considerations for this patient population include delaying repair of asymptomatic hernias until all pregnancies are complete, avoiding synthetic mesh in WoCA, and the use of primary repair as a temporizing measure for younger patients with symptomatic hernias. Managing patient expectations becomes a critical part of the process, especially for those patients who require more involved hernia repairs. Long overlooked, women of childbearing age have firmly established themselves as a distinct patient cohort within the field of hernia.
