The Department of Multidisciplinary Innovation (DMI) at the University of North Texas is a unique department with several programs that prepare students to be curious and creative learners. DMI programs target dual credit-seeking high schoolers, traditional and non-traditional college students aiming to finish or supplement their degrees. The leading pedagogical approach used across all DMI programs is Project-Based Learning (PBL). We demonstrate how the centrality of PBL in our curricula fosters students’ creative problem-solving and collaborative skills. Three examples from our teaching practice will be discussed: (1) how undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences program develop their creative problem-solving through collaboration; (2) how high schoolers in the dual credit North Texas NOW! program learn to think creatively and critically through Wicked Problems integrated across courses; (3) how undergraduate students in the B.S. Project Design and Analysis program develop their creative problem-solving skills while working on real-world problems with community partners.
