Established in 2018, the Barbara J. Burger iZone is a programming and services hub that helps students, faculty, and staff become more effective creative problem solvers, innovators, and changemakers. Located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library at the University of Rochester’s River Campus in Rochester, New York, iZone collaborates with partners within the university, within the surrounding Greater Rochester community, and beyond, to support undergraduate and graduate students who wish to drive positive social, cultural, community, or economic impact. Initiatives include providing pre-seed funding and resources to support student innovators through the Make it Happen prize program, offering guidance through 1:1 student peer workshops with iZone Consulting, hosting idea and wisdom-sharing events like “Screw Up Night” and “Pitch Imperfect,” and offering hands-on training through class visits, workshops, and credit-bearing courses in which students use design thinking and systems thinking to identify needs, brainstorm ideas, and then navigate structural obstacles and bureaucracies to address systemic and societal challenges.
