A common goal of Institutions of Higher Education is to make an impact in the world through creative knowledge development and innovation. Achieving this goal, however, has the added responsibility of making sure that such efforts promote positive change. In this way, creative innovations in higher education require a principled approach. This chapter describes one such concept called Principled Innovation (PI). The concept of Principled Innovation (PI) refers broadly to taking responsible actions to promote changes at the individual, organizational, and societal levels. The PI concept operates a framework (PI Framework), created by the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation (MLFC) at Arizona State University (ASU). The PI Framework ‘guides our ability to imagine new concepts, catalyze ideas and form new solutions, guided by principles that create positive change for humanity.’ The chapter opens with a description of the core practices identified within the MLFC PI Framework and how PI has been infused into educator preparation programs. Finally, the chapter describes how PI has been embraced as a ‘design aspiration’ by the broader ASU community and integrated into various university contexts. Implications and future directions for PI will also be discussed.
