Applied Creativity in Higher Education: Preparing Students for Work and Life in the 21st Century
摘要
The purpose of higher education is arguably twofold: to prepare students for success in their professional careers, and to prepare them for success and satisfaction in their personal lives and as citizens. In this chapter, we present a case for the value of creativity as an indispensable skill with which students can build their professional success and life satisfaction. Since the earliest humans, creativity has been an especially important survival skill enabling humans to thrive in a wide range of physical environments. In a world increasingly described as volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, creativity and creativity-related skills have become widely touted as crucial 21st-century skills. In this opening chapter, we define creativity and highlight how creativity and creativity-related skills are necessary to meet the demands of today’s turbulent work environments and ever-changing life circumstances. We argue that creativity education is necessary in a rapidly changing world, both to cope with the pace of change and to proactively participate in change making, as such we explore the efficacy of creativity training in higher education. Finally, we introduce the structure of Part II of this book which features examples of the various ways in which colleges and universities around the world are developing the creative capacities of their students.
