Culture: What We Stand for
摘要
Cultures are inevitable. As long as human behavior is involved cultures will emerge and cannot be avoided. They are nurtured by our behavior, decisions, priorities, and by the people we chose to include in any group. Our goal in this discipline is to prevent our organizational cultures to emerge on their own, by happenstance, and instead, to design for them to grow the closest possible to what we intend to have as a culture. The inevitability of cultures naturally emerging in groups of people comes with a hard consequence: we can’t hide it; everyone can feel it, everyone can see it, and permeates every aspect of people’s involvement in the organization. Cultures connect people with the organization and its purpose. Designing the organization for vitality starts with an intentional design for the culture we need. This culture articulation is translated to behavioral expectations and ultimately into process and policies, as discussed in The Trilogy. There are three foundational elements to the culture in a group: Written Culture, Designed Culture, and Manager Culture; and a fourth element that emerges from the three—the Experienced Culture.
