Stance Nouns in Online Painting Exhibition Overviews
摘要
Art museums and galleries around the world are increasingly using the internet to promote their special on-site events. Among the most notable of these events are temporary painting exhibitions, which have become a central feature of many art venues. Online painting exhibition overviews (OPEOs) are designed not only to persuade audiences to visit the on-site exhibition but also to provide valuable information about the artworks, the artists, and other relevant topics related to the exhibition. This dual function of promoting the exhibition and educating the public is fulfilled through a range of linguistic tools in this genre. This study explored how stance nouns are utilized strategically by the writers in the 58,625-word corpus of 200 OPEOs compiled from the websites of 20 reputable art museums and galleries in the US and in the British Isles. The analysis showed that these tools are most frequently adopted in the grammatical categories of (1) this-N (e.g., this approach) and (2) N-complement (e.g., a chance to experience). The functional analysis of the stance nouns revealed that the authors mostly attribute their evaluation towards the entities (e.g., sensational discovery) and the attributes (e.g., rare opportunity) in the OPEOs. The findings offer valuable insights into this growing digital genre, with implications for art institutions seeking to engage broader audiences through online overviews of their exhibitions.
