This chapter examines the spoken genre of the demonstrating artist talk as practiced by the international community of potters, clay sculptors, and ceramic artists. Integrating live hands-on demonstrations of technical expertise with parallel commentary on topics relevant to the discourse community, the genre allows artists to describe materials, tools, and techniques, but also to discuss creativity and artistic expression, and share perspectives on their lives as professional practitioners of the ceramic arts. This chapter presents a qualitative analysis of rhetorical functions found in demonstrating artist talks given at the annual conference of the North American organization of The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). Using a corpus of ten recorded talks from past conferences, transcribed texts were qualitatively coded to identify salient patterns of rhetorical functions. The results yielded ten conventional functions, either obligatory or highly probable, which are described in detail and illustrated with examples drawn from the corpus. Overall, the functions reflect the duality of a demonstrator-persona and artist-persona. The former is primarily focused on explaining live hands-on procedures, technical processes, and physical items, while the latter encompasses creative processes, habitual practices, technique development, studio characteristics, artist community, and personal background.
