Siderophores are small metal-chelating molecules produced by various organisms. They can chelate and incorporate iron from the environment. The fact that this property of siderophores is not limited to iron ions makes them valuable tools in environmental science. The rise in heavy metalHeavy metal pollution poses serious threats to human health and ecosystems, creating an urgent need for effective, sustainable, and cost-effective remediation strategies. Siderophore-assisted bioremediation come out as a convincing approach to address this issue. This chapter covers the environmental benefits and related uses of siderophores and metallophores produced by bacteria in terrestrial and aquatic environments. It highlights their applications in bioremediation, pathogen control, and promoting plant growth in both marine and terrestrial environments. Siderophores, which are secondary metabolites, contribute significantly to the bioavailability of heavy metals by supporting their uptake and transformation in ecological systems. Additionally, they enhance the effectiveness of bioremediation efforts by supporting microbial life in polluted soils and waters. By removing metal ions, siderophores and metallophores also indirectly limit the vital activities of pathogenic microorganismsMicroorganisms and prevent their spread. In agricultural settings, they help manage plant toxicity and enhance crop yield. Through the improvement of nutrient absorption, particularly iron, from the soil, these compounds can increase crop yields and bolster resistance to environmental stressors. Recent research has illuminated the effectiveness of different siderophores and metallophores under various environmental conditions and the innovative methods of their application.
