Contamination of environment by toxic metals is a matter of concern, especially in developing countries due to urbanization, industrialization, and use of unsustainable practices in agriculture. There are number of ways to remediate the ecosystem, such as through physicochemical and biological methods. Many of them, nevertheless, are not found to be economically feasible and do not guarantee recovery without side effects. The biotransformation of heavy metals from soil by microbes and plants is discussed in this chapter, with a focus on the need for remediation technology to restore metal-contaminated ecosystems and to prevent harmful effects. These include phytoremediation and bioremediation techniques, which are economical and environmentally friendly methods for restoring contaminated areas.
