Emerging Technologies: A Glimpse Into the Future of Toxic Heavy Metal Management

Toxic heavy metals emerging from industrial activities, agriculture, mining and inadequate waste disposal, set froth substantial threat to both human and environmental health owing to their persistence and ability to accumulate in the ecosystem. This chapter delves into the advancements in the management of these heavy metals. Innovations in nanotechnology, comprising the usage of gold and silver nanoparticles and nano-based sensors with enhanced sensitivity have accelerated detection procedures of heavy metals. Biosensors could be applied for real-time monitoring and early warning systems. Bioremediation, including phytoremediation, microbial fuel cells, etc., emerges as a sustainable solution for stabilizing or removing heavy metals from the environment. Moreover, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), nanocomposites and biochar have proven effective options with outstanding remediation capabilities. Membrane filtration technologies, such as ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration, have a critical role in waste water management. Incorporating these emerging technologies into management strategies can demonstrate a holistic framework for the remediation of heavy metal pollution and attaining sustainability.
