Mechanisms of Phytoremediation

To be able to discuss the remediation techniques of the polluted areas, it is necessary to discern between the terms contaminated and polluted. In many manuscripts, these terms are defined differently, so we consider it necessary to clarify from the beginning of this chapter that a contaminated area can be defined as an area that has a chemical state deviated from the normal composition, but which has no negative effect on the biocenosis. Conversely, a polluted area is one in which an element or substance is present in a much larger amount than in the natural state in the environment, respectively, in abiotic and/or biotic components. Thus, it can be said that the areas are not polluted if the pollutant does not exceed a threshold concentration that affects the human and animal population or the primary producers, respectively, the biological processes. To solve the problems associated with the pollutionPollution of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, technologies have been developed to remedy them. Remediation can be defined as “the management of polluted areas to prevent, mitigate, and eliminate damage to human health, or the environment as a whole.”
