Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and chromium are a few of the heavy metals that contaminate the environment most frequently. They are recognized as significant environmental contaminants that pose serious health risks, particularly in vulnerable populations. Heavy metals enter the environment through both human activity and natural processes. Insecticides, mining, sewage discharge, urban runoff, industrial effluents, and soil erosion are some of the prime sources. Although heavy metals are essential for life, their accumulation can pose a significant threat to both mankind and animal health by contaminating food, water, and the air. The exposure of these toxic metals can result in vascular damage, gastrointestinal problems, kidney problems, skins lesions, immunulogical and birth defects. The chapter highlights the cumulative effect of toxic heavy metals in the human body, where they can persist for years, potentially causing long-term health issues such as neurological disorders, cancer, and developmental impairments. Furthermore, the chapter examines the global scale of the problem, emphasizing that industrial activities, poor waste management, and agricultural practices contribute to heavy metal contamination worldwide. It also discusses the lack of immediate symptoms associated with heavy metal exposure, complicating diagnosis and timely intervention. Ultimately, the chapter underscores the urgent need for effective public health policies, improved monitoring, and sustainable practices to mitigate heavy metal exposure. By raising awareness of this silent threat, it aims to foster a greater understanding of the long-term consequences of heavy metal toxicity and encourage collective action to protect both human health and environmental integrity.
