Indoor Optical Wireless Communication

This chapter explores the role of optical wireless communication (OWC) in enhancing indoor connectivity, particularly as a complementary solution to traditional radio frequency (RF) systems. It builds on the technologies introduced in the previous chapters such as VLC and infrared communication (IRC), emphasizing their advantages, including unlicensed spectrum availability, high data rates, and resistance to electromagnetic interference. The discussion extends to the concept of Light Fidelity (LiFi), an advanced VLC-based system that offers both secure and high-speed wireless access for data transmission along with illumination. Additionally, the chapter investigates advanced multiple-access techniques like Sparse Code Multiple Access (SCMA) for VLC-based networks, analyzing codebook design and performance. A hybrid LiFi/WiFi architecture is also presented, demonstrating its potential to alleviate spectrum congestion and increase coverage in indoor environments. Through simulation and experimental validation, the chapter assesses the feasibility of integrating LiFi with existing wireless infrastructures, ensuring seamless and efficient data transmission in modern communication systems.
