With the prominent growth of optical networks, it is essential to look at the key concepts related to optical fiber cable. This chapter presents an introduction to various types of core optical networks, namely, long-haul networks, metropolitan area networks, and access networks. This chapter especially focuses on optical access networks and their types. Specifically, this chapter presents an in-depth analysis of the architecture of passive optical network (PON) and its variants including, Gigabit PON (G-PON), Ethernet PON (EPON), 10-Gigabit EPON (10G-EPON), 10-Gigabit symmetrical EPON (XGS-PON), next-generation PON2 (NG-PON2), and 50-Gigabit PON (50G-PON).
