The facial nerve and parotid gland have such close and intrinsic anatomical relationships that all parotid gland surgical procedures must be guided through anatomical landmarks to perform the most exact surgical gland resection, preserving the facial nerve and respective collateral and terminal branches whenever possible. Neuromonitoring allows for the identification of the facial nerve.
