In this chapter, we are interested in dating past events by analyzing fossil materials. Among the many techniques used in the Earth sciences, one of the most popular is the radiocarbon dating method (Bowman 1990; Walker 2005; Hajdas 2008; Wood 2015). The method was proposed by Willard Libby (1908–1980), a professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, in 1946. For his discovery, in 1960, he obtained a Nobel Prize (Libby 1960; Olsson 2009). Owing to this discovery, another revolution in the Earth sciences commenced—the radiocarbon revolution.
