The Clocks of Perception: Rhythms of Ionic Gradients Shape Partial Awareness Incidents

In recent years, changes from early embryonic stereotyped behaviors to stimulus-related fetal behaviors have been recorded following mid-gestation. These include capacities such as habituation and orienting response, which incorporate a transitory quality of awareness. Given these recent data, this chapter shows that more organized fetal behaviors during the last trimester are based on biological components which are known to construct neural wiring. Among these biological components, this chapter notes that following embryonic rapid phases of development NMDA mediated by AMPA serves as an inhibition agent for the GABA-glutamate excitatory interplay. This rise of inhibitory factors at mid-gestation is controlled by CI− mobilization of Ca2+ cell entries towards more balanced frequencies of neural cell’s action potentials as part of the cell’s increasing readiness to partner in postsynaptic transmission and wiring. Glial cells are able to define potential errors in wiring even before the maturation of any specific wiring. Later they regulate the osmotic homeostasis in the neural cell through choroid plexus macrophages, thus contributing to the speed and fate of wiring. Recent data suggest that the rhythms of cellular osmosis are controlled by clock genes through their typical posttranslational regulation of protein activity, ion transport, and consolidation of proteome renewal cadences. The timing of changes in the Cl− dynamics and in the type of clock gene oscillations coincides with the onset of experience-shaped synaptic changes. This implies that by this timing, at mid-gestation, feedback loops exist between the behavioral and the molecular levels, resulting in the onset of coordinated firing of neural networks and corresponding stimulus-responsive behavioral outcomes. Thus, the clocks of perception are described in this chapter as produced by molecular-based sustained wiring through synapse selection. This in turn results in a gradual active collection of germinal transitory quality of awareness peaks, for any given behavior at any given intrauterine compound from mid-gestation onwards. In this sense, very early perceptions occur in instances when molecular events meet morphological readiness to exhibit a behavior and absorb its results at the same time. The expansion of these instances depends on the rhythms of their repetition.
