Reintroduction of the Kihansi Spray Toad

With the assistance of IUCN and the IUCN/SSC Amphibian Specialist Group, LKEMP recruited two technical advisors to assist in initiating the reintroduction of the Kihansi Spray Toad back to the Kihansi Gorge. The advisers’ first task was to design an experimental cage that would prevent newborn Kihansi Spray Toads from escaping but large enough to permit the entry and exit of small invertebrate food items. A 1 m × 1 m experimental cage with a 3 mm wire mesh was tested and selected. The IUCN consultants then conducted two replicated and one non-replicated experiments. In the first replicated experiment, adult survival was found to be higher in the Upper Spray Wetland than in Lower Spray Wetland. In the second replicated experiment, adult and sub-adult survival did not vary between the Upper and Lower Spray Wetlands although this result may have been affected by damage to the artificial spray irrigation system in the Upper Spray Wetland as a result of a landslide. In the third experiment, newborn survival was found to be 4.5 times higher than adult survival across the Upper and Lower Spray Wetlands.
