In late 2007, the Lower Kihansi Environmental Management Project and the IUCN Species Survival Breeding Specialist Group organized a population and habitat viability assessment workshop for the Kihansi Spray Toad. The objective of this workshop was to develop a management plan for the captive Kihansi Spray Toad population in US zoos and provide input for a species reintroduction plan for the spray toad. Because of concerns about potentially transmitting exotic pathogens back to Tanzania, it was agreed that biosecure captive breeding facilities would be established at the Bronx and Toledo zoos. It was also agreed at the population and habitat viability assessment workshop that two biosecure facilities would be constructed in Tanzania for further screening of pathogens and that the Bronx, Toledo, and San Diego zoos would develop a training program for Tanzanian scientists and animal keepers in establishing and managing amphibian biosecure captive breeding facilities. In 2010, LKEMP and the IUCN/SSC Amphibian Specialist Group organized a second international workshop that focused on the development of reintroduction guidelines for the Kihansi Spray Toad and the identification of key activities that would be required prior to transferring animals back to Tanzania including the development of a training program for Tanzanian scientists in amphibian pathology, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics.
