For more than a decade, the term “emerging contaminants” (ECs) has highlighted the importance of chemicals, drawing significant global attention amidst mounting environmental concerns regarding their chemical nature, as all of them are not currently regulated. Environmental concerns related to ECs have gained global attention in recent years. An outline of the present state of emerging pollutants is given in this abstract, encompassing per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), microplastics, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, heavy metals, industrial additives, surfactants, flame retardants, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), biological contaminants, and nanomaterials. Over 100 million chemical substances are registered with the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), affecting water quality and ecosystem health. The US Environmental Protection Agency regulates over 90 contaminants, with the Contaminant Candidate List increasing every 5 years. This chapter discusses emerging contaminants in developed countries, their impacts on human health and ecological systems, and the importance of raising awareness for sustainable practices and water quality protection, despite strict regulations.
