Preparing their institutions for present and future success is a mission-critical role and responsibility of academic deans. This is particularly important in light of the numerous environmental threats that can challenge an institution’s continued success and potentially its survival. Successful academic deans are proactive in skillfully utilizing strategic management to ensure the continued success of their institutions. They utilize environmental scanning to develop the insights necessary to properly formulate strategic goals and strategies in support of their institution’s present mission and future vision.
