This chapter applies the anti-discriminatory approach to social work practice found in the resilience-enhancing stress model to a lesbian couple facing a midlife transition involving a critical health care event. It provides social workers with a family-centered methodology that addresses issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The processes of meaning-making, self-reflection, and ongoing identity formation are used to enhance resilient social functioning. A practice example describes the person–environment factors that influence the couple’s resilience as they resisted homophobia, heterosexism, ableism, and ageism and reconstructed their family narrative over time.

摘要

This chapter applies the anti-discriminatory approach to social work practice found in the resilience-enhancing stress model to a lesbian couple facing a midlife transition involving a critical health care event. It provides social workers with a family-centered methodology that addresses issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The processes of meaning-making, self-reflection, and ongoing identity formation are used to enhance resilient social functioning. A practice example describes the person–environment factors that influence the couple’s resilience as they resisted homophobia, heterosexism, ableism, and ageism and reconstructed their family narrative over time.
