This chapter of the text discusses two communities’ recovery efforts to overcome disruptions to their ecosystems caused by natural disasters. The first explores recovery efforts in New Orleans Ninth Ward, a low-income, primarily African American neighborhood, following Hurricane Katrina. Interviews with the Ninth Ward survivors of the storm, who faced diversity and equity issues that threatened their very survival, reveal their natural healing strategies, innate creative processes, and mutual aid strategies used to overcome these risks. The second part of the chapter discusses reclamation activities in the aftermath of a series of earthquakes in Canterbury, New Zealand. Narrative research interviews during recovery efforts exposed how Māori Indigenous survivors of the quake used their cultural ties and values as protective factors (Kirmayer et al., 2011, Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, 56(2), 84–91). These protective factors informed the rebuilding efforts and furthered the enhancement of community resilience.
