This chapter introduces and critically analyzes the “classic models” of time-consciousness. These include the cinematic, retentional, and extensional models. Each model positions itself relative to the so-called “Doctrine of the Specious Present,” which takes it that our subjective present is actually an interval of time and not instantaneous. After reviewing the details of each model, the chapter makes the case that these models are not in fact mutually exclusive, even though they are often presented as such. This chapter also begins a defense of the specious present view in general, as represented by both the extensional and retentional models, against non-specious present views, most commonly represented by the cinematic view.
