Salutogenesis in the Context of Work
摘要
Work plays a key role in human life and is closely linked to health of employees. Thus, the salutogenic model of health (SMH) has been systematically applied, tested and advanced in the context work. The original SMH can be specified for the work context by showing that job demands and job resources act as context-specific stressors and generalized (resistance) resources respectively. Building on the job-demands-resources model in psychology and the health development model in public health, we expand the SMH into the job-demands-resources health model. This shows how job demands lead to negative health outcomes (pathogenic path), whereas job resources lead to positive health outcomes and at the same time buffer the negative impact of job demands (salutogenic path). Further, it is suggested to use a context-specific measure of SoC, the Work-SoC, to assess the coherence of the work experience. Additionally, the concept of job crafting is introduced, a behavior of employees pro-actively shaping their working life. Finally, learnings for promoting salutogenic work on the individual, team and organizational level are presented.
