Ochre Painting Workshops as a Tool for Interactive and Sensory Museum Learning
摘要
Ochre is a colourful thread that flows through the Origins Centre—from the earliest known art forms through to its use in rock art paints. Ochre holds significant cultural value and is still widely used around the world for its mineral properties, for ritual, art and in industry. Ochre painting workshops are offered at Origins Centre Museum as part of the larger museum experience. The workshops are interactive and tactile and foster a personal link to our shared human past through sensory and first-hand engagement with the material. They are structured as informal sessions to experiment with ochre and natural pigment, while learning about other medicinal and cosmetic applications of ochre, and why this unassuming rock is important in our human journey. The experience also allows for information sharing about ochre and insight into the publics’ understanding of our deep time human journey and allows museum professionals to connect with their public. The workshops highlight our shared human heritage, and our diverse yet inter-linked cultural practices. They also aim to create a personal and memorable learning experience that facilitates direct interaction with museum artefacts and encourages a more contemplative and personal connection with the past.
