Transformative Experience Design in Science and Technology Centres and Museums; Assumption Shifts, Co-curation, Polyvocality, and Controversies
摘要
Science centres and science museums (SCMs) are increasingly experimenting with new roles at the science-society nexus, especially in light of complex societal challenges and system transformations urgently needed to address these challenges. From being merely focused on edutainment, and conservation of technoscientific objects in the case of science museums, SCMs increasingly design experiences that aim for societal transformation as well. In the last century, first steps towards this experimentation have been taken by pioneering researchers and practitioners in the science communication and museology field. In this chapter, we highlight the foundations that were built over time in designing contemporary transformative experiences in SCMs, and illustrate commonly used design features. The chapter glances over several contemporary exhibitions in Europe. aimed at societal transformation, which are framed in recent science communication and science museology literature. Drawing from our experiences in collaborating with SCM professionals, we end our chapter by highlighting complexities for organisations and professionals in designing such transformative experiences. To mitigate these challenges, we propose a tentative framework for transformative experience design—as opposed to merely edutainment focused experience design—for SCM professionals.
