Evolution of Teleradiology Workflow in El Salvador Due to COVID-19 Pandemic Context

The effects resulting from the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, dis covered in November 2019, impacted humanity in an unprecedented way, with the medical sciences sector being the most affected, but also the most empowered to face the health emergency. Implementing technology solutions that permit remote activity development is one of the main contributions of engineering to enable healthcare centers to continue operating with relative normality, reducing the number of personnel on-site to perform clinical functions. One of the technological implementations is teleradiology, defined as the ability to read medical images for clinical diagnosis remotely, is a tool that, due to its ease of adaptation and the advances in radiology digitization, allowed for the shortening of times and distances to provide radiologists with the ability to continue providing their knowledge in imaging diagnosis with the same safety and quality they would have inside hospitals. In this article, we will explore the impact that COVID-19 had on the evolution of teleradiology in El Salvador, analyzing its application before the virus appeared, the role it played during the emergency period, the permanent effects, and the expectations it will have in the new post-pandemic scenario. Finally, we will review the international context of teleradiology by analyzing, comparing, and issuing recommendations to improve radiology services through the technological evolution of remote medical information treatment methods.
