This chapter examines context and key drivers for gender equality and diversity data collection in Ireland from 2014 onwards. It details how Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) has become integral to Irish Higher Education (HE), highlighting recent policy frameworks and the need for data to advance equality. The chapter traces the evolution of data collection narratives in policy documents and their impact on addressing inequalities. Survey findings from EDI units in Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) reveal challenges and propose solutions for data collection. The authors conclude that while significant progress in systemic data collection has been made, approaches in HEIs vary. They propose a HEA-led integrated data collection portal to capture anonymised individual returns across the nine grounds and connect to HR staffing and post details. Such a database would provide comprehensive data for the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and HEIs, aiding the development of evidence-based policies to promote gender equality and equality more broadly.
