Visual Storytelling for Sustainability Communication. Practice-Based Design Techniques
摘要
Our ability to emotionally engage a wide variety of audiences with climate science is critical to our continued survival on this planet. Visual communication can facilitate this engagement—particularly when we aim to show humanity within the scientific data. Visuals are increasingly used to translate complex scientific and technical content for non-expert audiences. There is also a growing focus on storytelling as a method of communication to inspire behavior change. This chapter outlines the benefits of communicating environmental content through visual storytelling techniques. “Visual storytelling” is a method of communication that emphasizes narrative while using graphics to convey information and context. Using practice-based examples of visual storytelling as case studies, this article catalogs the benefits of visual storytelling and identifies key techniques of visual communication. The more communicators are able to creatively engage non-specialists in complex topics like climate, the sooner society can mitigate emissions and adapt to our changing climate.
